Umoja, Kenya, Rebecca Lolosoli is the head of this all women village. In protest against violence against these women the group of between 30 and 60 women left their husbands. They a forming a village now were they live in communion.
Some of the violence these women have been subjected to is regular beating and female circumcision.  **FGM is generally grouped into three categories: incision, the cutting of the hood of the clitoris; excision, the cutting of the clitoris and all or part of the labia minora; and infibulation, the removal of the clitoris, the adjacent labia (majora and minora), and the sewing of the scraped sides of the vulva across the vagina, except for a small opening.** It is estimated that 38% of women in Kenya have undergone such procedures, In rural areas the figures however can raise  up to 97%.
The women are Samburu. This is an ethnic group living in central north Kenya they are related to but distinct from the Maasai. The Samburu are semi nomadic adn live from raising cattle. They speak Samburu. Samburu comes from the "Samburr" meaning "leather bag" in which they carry a variety of things. The Samburu are polygynous.
A village consist in general of about 5 to 10 huts which are made out of stick branches and cow dung. The village is surrounded by a fence made out of thorn bushes.
